The Lumberjacks boys soccer team's 5-1 home win against Marshall was a heated affair that had it all - a lot of goals, a comeback, and a red card.
A slow start for Cloquet-Esko-Carlton saw the home team trailing 1-0 in just the seventh minute of Tuesday's matchup. The Hilltoppers goal was scored by senior midfielder Foster Schultz. The lead lasted until the 28th minute, when 'Jacks senior forward Collin Young put away the first of many goals for the Lumberjacks.
Five minutes later, senior co-captain Ben Schramm received the ball outside of the 18-yard box, slid past one defender and confidently scored Cloquet's second.
A yellow card for the Hilltoppers escalated quickly for the away side, as Marshall junior Benson Peterson was given a red card for comments made about his teammate's previous infraction.
A statement second half from CEC started in the 49th minute, with a crack shot into the top of the goal from senior co-captain Noah Hansen; his impressive dribbling set up the strike. Score, 3-1 Lumberjacks.
Hansen wasn't finished. He added a second to his tally and a fourth for CEC in the 58th minute, his third of the season.
In the 77th minute, CEC sophomore Attlei Sheldon drew a penalty kick off a foul coming into the 18-yard box. Penalty taker Hudson Snesrud had his effort saved by Marshall goalie Thomas Falgier. A series of rebounds following the penalty shot found 'Jacks forward Eli Heehn with the ball and he then scored his first varsity goal.
The game finished minutes later with a final score of 5-1 for CEC.
"We started slow in this game, but every team is going to be gunning for us. We want to make sure we're ready next time," said CEC head coach John Sundquist.
Schramm agreed with Sundquist.
"We can't afford to start slow and be slow to the ball," he said. "We have to be focused for 100 percent of the game, not 90 percent. The fact that we go 1-0 down and then we switch on and are good throughout the whole game is good."
Schramm is one of five senior captains on CEC; the others include Santi Anich, Brody Dushkin, Noah Hansen and Max Sundquist.
Sundquist praised the team captains and starters for their work so far this season.
"Brody Dushkin's been in the middle. They (the captains) are massive for us in the midfield. They're winning everything," Sundquist said. "Then Noah, Collin and Hudson ... Noah is having quite a season and Collin's got eight goals now. So, we're dangerous - we just gotta make sure we're dangerous more often."
Former Lumberjacks players Walker Marquardt and Drake Schramm joined the coaching staff this season. Sundquist said they're invaluable.
"It's great to have those guys back in the program," the coach said.
With Tuesday's win against the Hilltoppers, the 'Jacks moved to 2-3 on the season. They were set to play Hermantown Thursday at home, with the next home game vs. Duluth East Sept. 12.
