Students, staff and supporters of Cromwell-Wright School gathered Friday to celebrate progress on nearly $7 million in improvements to the school.
The summerlong construction projects marked the first substantive changes to the existing school building since it was constructed in 1995. Work included security updates throughout the building, a new, second competition-sized gymnasium, bathroom facelifts, improved commons areas, and rehabilitation and expansion of the parking lot.
The parking lot updates added capacity and feature a safer bus dropoff zone, while addressing drainage issues in the old lot. The security updates included the creation of a new main entrance for the building, and arming other doors with security alarms that trigger in the main office when a door is ajar.
The district broke ground on the work in May.
"This is very exciting," superintendent Nathan Libbon said then. "I'm so happy for our community, so happy for our school and thrilled for the students who will benefit from this for many years."
Voters in the district approved $6.45 million in improvements during a February 2023 referendum. The ballot measure passed with 56 percent of the vote.
The new gym is not finished yet, but it will be in time for the upcoming basketball season, a school source said.
