The Cromwell/Wright football team picked up its second win of the season Friday by throttling Hill City/Northland 60-8. For the second straight week the nine-man team had strong individual and team performances.
"I was very happy with how we performed on both sides of the ball, but especially offensively," said Cards head coach Jeff Gronner. "Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and our backs were able to do a lot of damage on the edge."
Cromwell/Wright led 20-0 after the first quarter as Brady Dahl scored on runs of 15 and 10 yards and Lane Gervais caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Drew Nyberg. Nyberg also added the extra point kicks on the first two touchdowns.
Second quarter action saw Drew Nyberg score on a four-yard run, then Dylan Nyberg added a 10-yard scamper and Dahl caught a 27-yard pass from Dylan Nyberg as the Cards went ahead 38-0.
On the ground, the Cards got 142 yards from Dahl on 12 carries, Dylan Nyberg finished 11 carries for 131 yards as the team rolled up 374 yards on the ground. In the air, Lane Gervais caught four passes for 112 yards. Drew Nyberg was 5-for-5 passing - good for 139 yards - and Brenden Gronner was 2-for-3 passing, good for 46 yards through the air.
"Dylan [Nyberg] has been running and throwing well and Lane [Gervais] had a great game on both sides of the ball - he is great with the ball in the air," coach Gronner said. "Even though he lacks height, Gervais goes up and gets balls, which resulted in some big catches on Friday and three picks. As good a game as Dahl had on offense, he is our defensive leader, and has been for three years now. There's not a better linebacker in our district."
In the third quarter, Dylan Nyberg scored on a 63-yard run and Gervais tacked on a five-yard touchdown run, making it 52-0 before Hill City/Northland was able to get on the board.
The only score of the fourth quarter was a Brenden Gronner 22-yard touchdown pass to Drew Nyberg, making it 60-8 after the Gronner two-point conversion run.
"I like where our team is right now, but we still have a lot to improve on," Coach Gronner said. "We are going in the right direction."
Up next for the Cards is a road game next Friday against Bertha-Hewitt.
"It will be a tougher test than the first two weeks," the coach said. "Our depth is very good; I have the ability to play up to 15 guys on either side of the ball and our ability level does not drop off very much."
The Cards are now 2-0 on the season.
