Obituary: Barbara Nelson

Barbara A. Nelson, 78 of Cloquet, passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living. She was born Feb. 6, 1946, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the daughter of Robert and Agnes (Costigan) Wappes.

Barbara attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Cloquet High School. She was married to Michael Nelson on April 16, 1966.

Before marriage, she worked in the general office for Northwest Paper in Cloquet. Following that, she was a stay-at-home mom and later a stay-at-home grandma.

Barbara was a longtime member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, where she was a eucharistic minister and a member of the Daughters of Isabella.

She also enjoyed traveling, baking, sewing, quilting, and reading.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Michael Nelson; son, Robert Nelson; and an infant brother, Michael Wappes.

She is survived by her children, Janine (Shane) Morrison and Alan (Melissa) Nelson; grandchildren, Ashley (David) Nelson, Stephanie (Jared) Gold, Brett (Emily) Morrison, Rachel (Wyatt) Morrison, Jack Nelson, Michael Nelson, Josie Nelson and Sophie Nelson; one great-grandson, Maverick Gold; and one eagerly awaited great-grandson.

A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27 until the 11 a.m. memorial Mass at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet.

Inurnment service will be at New Calvary Cemetery, followed by a lunch in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Queen of Peace school or church. Nelson Funeral Care is providing the arrangements.
