Highlights: Carlton County election results are in

With all of Carlton County's precincts reported by 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, the 2024 local election brought some interesting results. The results won't be official until after they are canvassed, but changes are rare after reporting.

Here are a few of the highlights:

The mayor's race in Wrenshall is tied. Incumbent Gary Butala and challenger Jeff Bloom each have exactly 143 votes each.

Two incumbent Carlton School Board members - Julianne Emerson and Eryn Szymczak - are out. Ryan Leonzal, an appointed incumbent, and challengers Dan Solarz and Ben Nilsen are in.

On the Barnum School Board, incumbents Louis Bonneville, Patrick Poirier and Beth Dinger will be joined by challenger Mike Orn on the board. Stephanie Ferrin was not reelected.

In Thomson Township's only contested seat, 20-year-old Nathan Barta won in a landslide, with 50 percent of the vote, defeating Jaryn Edblad and John Bergman.

Sarah Buhs and Dan Reed won in the contested Carlton County Commissioners races, with Buhs defeating Caleb Dunlap 55 to 44 percent while Reed defeated Alex French 54 to 45 percent.

When this story was posted at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, incumbent State Rep. (District 11A) Jeff Dotseth was ahead of challenger Pete Radosevich by 660 votes, or 51 to 48 percent, with 53 out of 57 total precincts reporting.

Carlton County voted for Donald Trump for president, 10,435 votes to 9,905 for Kamala Harris, roughly 50 percent to 47.5 percent. US Senator Amy Klobuchar got 54 percent of the vote in Carlton County.
