Philip E. "Phil" Lundgren passed away peacefully on Oct. 18, 2024, in Cloquet. He was born April 4, 1948, in Plymouth, Indiana, the youngest of five boys. Phil grew up in Babbitt, where he attended elementary, junior high, and high school and played hockey.
In his younger years, he would spend summers on the farm with his four older brothers, getting into all kinds of mischief. These summers sparked a lifelong enthusiasm and love for working on engines and, later, helping friends in local stock car races. Known for his kind heart and always willing to help others, Phil was the first person you'd call if your vehicle was stuck in a ditch, and he was always willing to lend a hand.
After high school, Phil completed four years of vocational training in millwright and machine operation, beginning a career that spanned decades. He worked for a short time at Brenny-Dahl Block Company in Cloquet and then soon moved on to work as a mill operator in the wood room at Potlatch, from 1974 to 2002. Later, Phil became self-employed, providing a service as a large-load hauler, driving throughout the U.S., and also serving local businesses by plowing snow during the winter.
He loved his brothers and enjoyed time with them, their wives, and his nieces and nephews, building memories that they will cherish. He will be deeply missed by those who knew him best.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Gustav H. and Svea A.E. Lundgren; two brothers, Keith E. Lundgren and Morris H. Lundgren; and one sister-in-law, Penny Lundgren. He is survived by two of his brothers and their wives: Rev. Nathan G. (Doreen) Lundgren of Garrison, Minnesota, and Forrest C. (Karen) Lundgren of Redwood Falls, Minnesota; as well as one sister-in-law, Shirley Lundgren of Babbitt; 17 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews; along with his faithful dog, Jethro.
A visitation is planned for 10 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Lunch will follow.
Family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched are welcome to join us in remembrance.
