Musings: Fond farewell to the smiling Ron

Some people have simple goals. It seems obvious to many that Ron Delbow performed that goal with a known luster. Though his recent passing on Oct. 18 was met with sadness, along with that is also a feeling of lasting affinity and appreciation for this fellow.

His obituary provided through McNearney-Schmidt Funeral in Shakopee, Minnesota said this:

"Ronald retired from Model Stone, a cement block plant, and lived Up North where he built a home. After some time, he decided to go back to work and got a job as a door greeter at Walmart in Cloquet, Minnesota. He worked there for nine years and loved every day of it."

In those nine years "Up North," Ron was a mainstay in the Walmart service area entrance, always a welcome sight. He was the perfect "greeter," and took his job to heart.

Children would say hello, young people would acknowledge, and regulars at Walmart took time frequently to exchange a few words. Delbow's unique interactions were never mechanical. When he said things like, "Yup, it's a nice day - you have one, too," there was a sincerity behind it that couldn't be ignored.

"You Betcha!" meant that he agreed with your comment, for he was a listener as well as a welcome voice. You knew he loved his job, and it showed.

He was at that familiar place just weeks before he passed, still smiling, waving at some, and "swapping howdies" with people.

He was a worker a person wanted to call by name to be personable, like Ron always was. When Covid hit the area in 2020-21, customers noted Ron's absence. When he was able to return to work, many saw him as an example of resilience in that dark and frustrating time for the world.

To honor his tenure and also his warmth, a small tribute table was set up at his "spot" by his daughter, Kim. The basket of notes says it all. People shared their thanks for Ron Delbow by taking a minute to reflect - in the manner that he took just a minute to brighten your day. He will be sorely missed, but not forgotten.

There are many ways to share a moment and let it be known in this world. Perhaps we can pass that spirit of smiles and good nature as the best way to remember people like Ron.
