Obituary: John Hunt Jr.

John G. Hunt Jr., 89 of Cloquet, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, at New Perspective Assisted Living. He was born Aug. 30, 1935, in Duluth, the son of John Sr. and Anna (Holmberg) Hunt, and resided in Brookston, graduating from Brookston High School.

John married Marie Niemi on Aug. 5, 1955, and they were inseparable for 69 years. John was very proud of the house they built together in 1960, and enjoyed reminiscing about the work they put in throughout his life. Even death could not disturb their partnership for very long - John joined Marie in heaven after missing her for just one month and one day.

John held various jobs prior to finding his career with Potlatch Corporation, where he was employed for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Quarter-Century Club and enjoyed keeping up with his previous co-workers as the years passed.

After retirement, John was able to spend more time on the golf course, and even worked part-time at 29 Pines in Mahtowa alongside his grandson, Matt.

John was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brookston (now part of Faith Lutheran in Culver) for many years.

He had a passion for hunting and fishing, and enjoyed countless rounds of cribbage in his spare time.

John was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and he cherished the times that he and Marie spent cheering them on through all their activities.

John was always the type of person you could count on to lend a helping hand in times of need or lighten the more somber times with his beloved sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie; and his siblings, Peggy, Bob, Lester, Fred, and Ted. He is survived by his children, Jeff (Nanette) Hunt, Barb (Rick) Chabot, and Jennifer (Steve) Collins; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sisters, Ginger and Lois; and other treasured relatives and friends.

John's family would like to express their sincere thanks to Ross at New Perspective Assisted Living and Essentia Health Hospice for their dedicated care.

Services in honor of John will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Nelson Funeral Care. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service. A luncheon will follow. To sign an online registry, please visit http://www.nelsonfuneralcare.net.
