Obituary: Eileen Wood

Eileen Pearl Wood, 93 of Cloquet, formerly of Canyon, Minnesota, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, at Inter-Faith Care Center while in the care of hospice.

Eileen was born Sep. 11, 1931, in New Richmond, Wisconsin, to Walter J. and Margaret A. (Studley) Elmore. The family moved to Montana in 1933, where her dad and uncle worked on the construction of Fort Peck Dam. The Elmores moved to Meadowlands, Minnesota, in 1939, where she graduated from high school in 1949.

Eileen married William W. Wood of Canyon on July 22, 1950, at First Lutheran Church in Meadowlands. They lived near Alborn, then moved to Canyon, where Willie and Eileen raised their family. Eileen was an active member of St. Peter's Church and later associated with Bethel Lutheran Church in Cloquet.

Following Willie's death on June 28, 1986, she worked at Super One in Cloquet until her retirement in 1996. She moved to Cloquet a few years after Willie's death and most recently lived at Larson Commons.

Eileen is survived by her children, Janice Strum of New Brighton, Minnesota, Dennis (Caryn) Wood of Culver, Linda (Joseph) Tasky of Culver, Carolyn (Edward) Wojtysiak of Culver, and Dale (Virginia Garner) Wood of Culver; son-in-law, H. Joseph Tyler of Baltimore, Maryland; grandchildren: Kristie Strum, Eric (Angela) Strum, Sarah (Darrell Davis) Miller, Adam (Kristin) Wood, Kent (Missy) Wojtysiak, Philip (Angela) Wood, Brian (Kelly) Tasky, Jennifer Tasky, Katelyn (Nick) Hite, Chad (Amanda) Wood, Anthony (Caitlyn) Wood, Christian Wood; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her brother, Arthur (Doris) Elmore of Duluth; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Wood in 1986; their children, Henry Joseph Wood in 1952, Karen Wood Tyler in 1990, Donald Wood in 2011; their grandson, Brad Wojtysiak in 2022; great-grandson, Mason Wood in 2011; and son-in-law, Curt Strum in 2022; her siblings/in-laws, Robert (Charlotte) Elmore, Mary Jane (Douglas) Davin (Gary) Studley, Margaret (Harold) Abramson, Vera (Gordon) Reimer, Mae Dean Elmore in 1937, Walter (Mavis) Elmore Jr., Fern (Frank) Neuberg; and her in-laws, Gertrude (Rolf) Sundby, Vincent (Ollie) Wood, Dorothy (Harry) Bandel, Marie (Wallace) Sundin, and Joseph (Mary) Wood.

Thank you to the staffs of Larson Commons and Senior Friends, and Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, and St. Croix Hospice for their support and care of Mom, Grandma, Grannie.

Visitation was 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 at Nelson Funeral Care. Visitation will continue at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Canyon at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, until the 11 a.m. funeral service. Burial will be held at Northland Cemetery in Canyon. Lunch will follow at The Canyon Event Center, attached to the Dawghouse Bar and Grill.
