Play puts spin on Dickens

The County Seat Theater Company ends its 2024 season with a new take on Charles Dickens.

"A Goblins' Christmas Carol" by Kenny Chumbley premiered last fall at the Orpheum Theatre in Champaign, Illinois. It's a musical that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

"The County Seat Theater was excited to work directly with playwright Kenny Chumbley on bringing this piece to life," said Joel Soukkala, the theater's general manager and music director. "He has been very generous in allowing us the opportunity to work with his script, wherein we can tailor this production to the strengths of our stage and CST actors. The show has beautiful period set pieces and costumes, an imaginative fantasy sequence, a large, entertaining cast, and should be enjoyable for all ages."

The story opens and closes in a Victorian English manor circa 1835, on a snowy Christmas Eve. At a party hosted by Mr. Wardle (played by David Baker), guest of honor Lady Pickwick (Kasie Paulson) tells the story of an angry man, Gabriel Grub (Michael Rosen), a local sexton (gravedigger) who was snatched by a band of goblins years ago on Christmas Eve.

Once in their subterranean cavern, the leader of the goblins (Ruthie Breuer) explains they kidnapped Grub to give him a Christmas gift: a chance - a final chance - to redeem his wasted life. Grub is presented with an enchanted mirror, through which he is forced to revisit painful events of abuse he suffered as a child that contributed to his struggles in adulthood; and through the visions one sees how he attains a touch of redemption despite his past.

The County Seat Theater Company will present performances at 7 p.m. Dec. 6-7 and Dec. 11-13, and at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 and Dec. 14-15 at the Encore Performing Arts Center in Cloquet.
