Maxine Lois Phelps, age 97, died on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Suncrest Assisted Living in Scanlon, Minnesota. She was born on March 4, 1927, to Ora and Inez (Mills) Acker in Raymond, South Dakota. At age five, she moved with her family to Wisconsin and lived in the Foxboro area until 1947. Maxine graduated from Superior Central High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to Coral F. Phelps on June 11, 1947, and the two were blessed with 71 years together. Maxine resided in Wrenshall the remainder of her life until entering Suncrest Assisted Living. She worked with her husband for the DHIA until 1950, and then for the Postal Service from 1950 – 1984. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wrenshall. Maxine belonged to WIBC Bowling League, NAPUS, NARFE-AARP, and was a life member of Blood Donors. She enjoyed bowling, camping, yard work, and especially her grandchildren and Bible study.
Maxine is survived by her son, Wayne Phelps; daughter, Kimberly Fralich; granddaughter, Amber (Justin) Male; three great-grandsons, Braedyn, Braxdyn and Breckyn; Goddaughter, Jackie (Frank) Curtiss; sister-in-law, Jean Wilson; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the chosen grandmother to the Moe children. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Donald and Fordyce.
Services in honor of Maxine’s life will be held Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will continue until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service with a luncheon to follow. Spring interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Carlton.
