The documentary PBS television show “Inside Senior Living,” featuring several Carlton County residents, is now being shown on stations across the country.
Senior living consultant Melissa Fritz of Minneapolis found herself smack dab in the middle of the confusion and chaos of elderly care when her father was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s dementia. From all of this uncertainty came the idea for the docuseries following Minnesota families as they navigate these often gut-wrenching scenarios. Each of the eight episodes were filmed in Minnesota and follow families navigating care for loved ones.
The show has been airing on PBS North in Duluth since the end of last year. It’s also available at http://www.youtube.com/@PBSNorth.
In Episode 1, Jean and Gary Terrio of Cloquet share their experience navigating the complexities of aging in rural Minnesota, from a stay in rehab after a broken hip to adapting their home and seeking community support. They have a strong support system in Cloquet, including their daughter and family, along with friends.
Fritz praised the Terrios’ careful planning, including frank discussions with their children.
“We … didn’t want to have what I’ve seen happen over the years, where something drastic has happened in the family, an illness or a death, and part of the family says ‘we didn’t know, nobody told us,’” Jerry said in the introduction to their segment. “We don’t want that for our kids.”
Each episode follows a different person or couple through the issues they face with aging. Last names are not used, but don’t be surprised to see familiar faces. In Episode 3, Fond du Lac elder Eleanor and her caregiver Deb discover the power of community support, cultural practices and focusing on abilities. Episode 4, with Deb and David Peterson, explores the impact of early-onset
dementia, the role of male caregivers, and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Promotion for the show says it “goes beyond the conventional narratives surrounding senior living communities, immersing itself in the diverse experiences of families. Through thought-provoking interviews, expert insights, and real-life
examples, the show aims to create a platform for dialogue around the opportunities and challenges faced by older adults today.”
